For some of us the path to graduation night began the Tuesday after Labor Day in 1954. We were one of three classes that spent six years at Ells High (do people give you a funny look when you mention that you were in high school for six years?). The program for the evening listed 428 graduates, including 24 Honor Graduates. Everyone gathered at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium which was located next to that popular social gathering spot called the Public Library. On went the caps and gowns and then we marched/walked/skipped into the auditorium to the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance provided by the school orchestra. The orchestra and the choir filled the air with instrumental and vocal selections throughout the evening. Intermingled were speeches from classmates and school administrators. Our class president (Pete Scalia) announced our names and the school principal (Mr. Pascoe) handed out the diplomas. Do you remember a youngster yelling from the balcony "Es mi hermano" when his brother walked across the stage? That brought a few chuckles from everyone. Graduation night was one of those extra special times that take place in our lives. By sunrise the next morning you may have realized that the decision as to whether or not to go to school was now yours. Straight ahead on the horizon was the future, looking at us and not revealing any hint of what was ahead. The paths after graduation certainly went in different directions. Some paths have crossed on a regular basis while others have crossed at reunions. For those of you whose paths have not crossed since graduation, please keep in touch. |
